What’s this all about?

Well, it’s kind of a long story.

Here’s the short version:

The call

In early 2022, I got a call from a fellow retired pilot, asking if I wanted to do the Camino hike.  I said "sure" without really knowing anything about it. That’s just the kind of guy I am.

My traveling companion’s name, incidentally, was Mark. And my name is Mark. So he is referred to only as “Spence” on this website. There’s a picture of him, below. On the trail, we were sometimes known as Le Deux Marks.

I took my second Camino pilgrimage in Fall 2022, tackling the trails alone. Ever since then, I keep coming back for more. My outdoor adventures include Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk and the West Highland Way in Scotland. I’m officially hooked, and always looking for the next trail.

The reasons

The scenery, the food, and the time to introspect all make this type of travel attractive. In addition, having the opportunity to interact with so many fascinating strangers along the way is a rare thing that I deeply enjoy.

The pilgrims

I do not take these journeys for any kind of religious pilgrimage.  I do recognize that is exactly why many others walk on the Camino and other paths. Writing about my travels does bring about some introspection. We will see how all the pilgrims keep responding to my sense of humor. So far, we are having a blast.
